While most of us are aware we should be going for regular dental and health check ups, booking in for a skin exam is something you may have pushed down your list of priorities. Whether you have been putting off a skin check due to lack of time, fear of what to expect, or because you think it’s not necessary, you really should be seeing your dermatologist at least once a year. Those with a family history of skin cancer or anyone who has experienced bad sunburns in the past needs to be particularly vigilant. Don’t wait until a new mole appears or existing ones start to change shape, regular visits to the dermatologist ensure any irregularities in the skin are spotted early and can be dealt with immediately.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD YOU GET A FULL BODY SKIN CHECK?
At any age if you see even the smallest changes in your skin such as inconsistent moles, raised freckles, or unusual sensations such as itchy or tingling skin, you should visit your dermatologist straight away. Between the ages of 25-30 is when you need to begin to get annual skin checks. These are routine examinations and only take about 30 - 45 minutes. The doctor will check the whole body, beginning with the areas that are regularly exposed to the sun such as the face, scalp, and hands. They will ask you about any skin cancer in your family, how often you go in the Sun, whether you use SPF, and if you have noticed any changes to your skin. If there are any obvious concerns, the dermatologist will use a dermatoscope to examine them closer. If necessary they may perform a biopsy, either on the same visit or schedule another appointment. In between skin check ups, it is vital that you invest in the long-term health of your skin by wearing sunscreen every single day, all year round.
